More Than a Stop Along the Journey: Finding Support in Vizbegovo

A cup of coffee, a game of chess, dominoes, a conversation, or a contribution meal may seem like small things. For people whose lives are shaped by uncertainty, however, these simple moments can provide something much more important: a sense of normality.

At the Reception Centre for Asylum Seekers in Vizbegovo, managed by the Ministry of Social Policy, Demography and Youth, people from different backgrounds and with different stories share the same temporary space while waiting for decisions about their future.

For many, Vizbegovo is not their final destination. Some remain only for a short period before continuing their journey, hoping to reach other European countries as soon as possible. Their time at the Centre may therefore be brief, but the need for support, information and human contact does not disappear simply because their stay is temporary.

This is where the daily presence of JRS Macedonia plays an important role.

Rather than focusing only on immediate material needs, JRS Macedonia works to create opportunities for interaction, communication and participation. One of the central spaces is the ‘Coffee Corner’, where beneficiaries can sit together, have a coffee, talk, and exchange experiences. It is an informal environment where conversations can develop naturally and where concerns or needs can sometimes become visible without a formal request for assistance.

The atmosphere is further supported through recreational activities, including chess, backgammon and sports. These activities offer more than entertainment. They provide opportunities to meet others, reduce isolation, and create moments of normal everyday life in an otherwise uncertain period.

Practical assistance remains an essential part of the support provided. JRS Macedonia contributes food and essential medicines for the most vulnerable beneficiaries, responding to identified needs and helping people who may have limited access to basic resources.

Information is equally important. Beneficiaries are provided with opportunities to access legal information and guidance when they want to better understand their rights, responsibilities, and available procedures. Having reliable information can help people make decisions about their situation and understand the options available to them.

Behind every person staying at Vizbegovo is an individual story. Some have travelled long distances, some are accompanied by family members, while others are facing their journey alone. Their reasons for leaving, their expectations and their plans for the future may be very different.

Yet, inside the Centre, the immediate needs are often universal: to be treated with dignity, to have someone listen, to know where to seek information, and to receive assistance when basic needs arise.

The work at Vizbegovo demonstrates that support for people on the move is not measured only by the amount of material assistance provided. It is also measured through the quality of human contact and the opportunity to preserve dignity during a period of uncertainty.

A cup of coffee may last only a few minutes. A game of chess may last an hour. A conversation may take even less time. But for someone far from home, these small moments can remind them that, even while passing through, they are not invisible and they are not alone.
